Horizontal Wrapper Horizontal wrappers, or flow wrappers, are designed to wrap a film enclosure around a package or product. The motion of the product on a horizontal wrapper is horizontal. Horizontal wrappers use a single roll of film, which is wrapped around the product using a former or forming box to guide the film.

The film is wrapped completely around the product with excess film below the center of the product. The excess film below the product can be sealed in two manners, either as a lap seal or as a fin seal. A lap seal occurs when the excess film is overlapped and the film is sealed to each other using hot air, a hot bar, or a hot wire. A fin seal occurs when the excess film is guided vertically below the product and sealed by one pair or multiple pairs of rotary fin seal wheels. The seal resulting from this operation resembles the dorsal fin on a fish if the package is turned upside down.

Horizontal Wrapper seals the front and back end seals using sealing jaws which heat seals the film together. The sealing jaws seal the back end of the current package and the front end of the following package at the same time while a knife cuts the film between the two sealing portions. On a horizontal wrapper, the sealing jaws are actually pairs of jaws that rotate about shafts that are below and above the product flow (one portion of the jaw is above, one portion of the jaw is below). The package is sealed and cut when the two portions of the sealing jaw meet. Horizontal wrappers can be designed with multiple pairs of sealing jaws for higher speed machines.
