Semi Automatic Cartoners Semi-automatic cartoners are designed to erect the carton, load the carton, and seal the carton using either tuck or glue. Semi-automatic cartoners require operators to perform some of the carton erecting, carton loading, or carton sealing functions manually or by hand. Semi-automatic cartoners can be designed with different levels of operation. Application specifications such as the sophistication of the application, speed of the application, and the requirements of the application will determine the level of automation appropriate for the application.

The simplest, least automated semi-automatic cartoner is designed to seal a carton’s one major flap with glue. This type of semi-automatic cartoner requires an operator to erect the cartoner, load product into the carton, close the minor flaps and a single major flap of the carton, and load the carton into the semi-automatic cartoner. The semi-automatic cartoner will then apply glue to open major flap, closes the flap, and compresses the closed carton ends until the glue sets and the carton is sealer. This type of semi-automatic cartoner is best used to prevent operators from handling the hot glue needed to seal the cartons. Also, this type of semi-automatic cartoner would not be useful in sealing tuck cartons because of the ease of hand closing a tuck carton.

The most automated semi-automatic cartoner erects the carton automatically, seals the carton automatically, and requires the operator to only load the product into the carton. Most semi-automatic cartoners of this design will erect the carton and stop the carton while presented to the operator for loading. The operator can then load the product into the carton and activate a trigger (a foot pedal is often used) to signal to the machine that the carton has been loaded. The semi-automatic cartoner then cycles to present the next carton to be loaded to the operator. This type of semi-automatic cartoner can be turned into a fully automatic cartoner by integrating an automatic product pusher arm to the semi-automatic cartoner to replace the motion and operation of the operator. (The modification in controls and sensors necessary to accomplish this feat are highly involved. This type of modification should only be undertaken by highly skilled technicians.)
